Texas Gov talks about increasing broadband access across state

In Texas, experts say more than 9 million people don’t have a broadband internet connection.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Texas Governor Greg Abbott is visiting Southeast Texas Monday to highlight legislation to increase broadband access across the state.

Abbot will be joined by Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, Representative Trent Ashby, and Hamshire-Fannett Independent School District superintendent Dwaine Augustine at a news conference at Hamshire-Fannett Elementary School.

Developer Will Pitch Plan To Build 56-Unit Apartment Complex On Project Logan Site In April

LOGAN SQUARE — Neighbors will have the opportunity to weigh in on a development planned for the Project Logan site at a community meeting next month.

Developer Stanislaw Pluta wants a zoning change to build a five-story, 56-unit apartment complex at 2934-40 W. Medill St., a site currently home to Project Logan, a four-sided graffiti wall curated by longtime graffiti artists and admired by many.

The plan also calls for a 56-space parking lot and ground-floor commercial space. Of the 56 apartments, eight would be reserved as affordable housing. The rest would be market-rate.

City board hears internet service plan

Siloam Springs may consider trying to add internet to its list of utilities.

City directors heard a presentation from Clarksville Connected Utilities General Manager John Lester about municipal fiber optic broadband internet during a workshop on March 16.

Lester said Clarksville has taken the plunge and started offering internet service to its utility customers.

“We think it’s important for municipalities to have innovative solutions to community issues,” Lester said.

Along with giving the board information about his background and about the history of Clarksville’s utilities, Lester spoke about the city’s journey into broadband internet.
